The Basics: The Alabama Cycling Classic combines the Sunny King Criterium, now in its 15th year, and the McClellan Road Race with the Noble Street Festival in downtown Anniston. It has been named a Top 10 Event in Alabama for tourism. In 2016, more than 500 cyclists competed in cycling events over the weekend, competing for $40,000 in prize money (for USA Cycling-registered riders), and medals/prizes for amateurs. This is the only pro cycling event in Alabama that is part of the prestigious USA Cycling Professional Road Tour.
As Alabama’s status grows in cycling circles, we’re bound to see more cyclists traveling the local country and mountain roads. This is a good thing. Cycling is one of the “clean” tourism economies generating critical tax revenue and generating local jobs growth. We want cyclists and their families to visit us, and we want them to tell others how great cycling is in Alabama. As local residents, we can participate in creating a bike-friendly destination that will attract additional cycling tourists. A simple way to accomplish this is to be a responsible pet owner. Grant-funded Project Will Make Loading/Unloading Bikes at Anniston’s Amtrak Station Possible

Anniston is one of only three cities in Alabama with rail service via Amtrak—an economic edge that cannot be overstated. The Alabama Cycling Classic is only a few weeks away, and across the city, volunteers, businesses, organizations, and others are tidying up and preparing to welcome cycling teams and their families from around the nation and the world. The annual event, held on the weekend of April 8 and 9, includes two professional road race events, the Sunny King Criterium on Saturday and the McClellan Road Race on Sunday.
